Halloween was great for the boys.  October allowed them to do activities such as attend their benefit, go to a library party, trick or treat, and do many craft activities.  They had a lot of fun going on hikes in the woods.

Mathew: Self chosen activities and mom inspired activities (11 yrs. old)

(Science)-  Mathew finished his Space unit last month.  We will enter into the Matter unit.  This is another favorite unit for him.  This month he will be challenged to follow directions with his experiments and record his findings.

(American History)-  He finished his September 11th unit last month.  He will chose different events to research and complete his test at the end.  This is a video taped comprehension test.  He basically gives an oral presentation of what he learned.  He enjoys these kinds of tests.

(Typing)-  Mathew finished a typed assignment on his chicken and his journal project.  We will take a break from typing.

(Math)-  We will be learning about geometry this month.  The focus is on problem solving.  Mathew really enjoys math.  He will be given a worksheet test at the end of the unit.

(Language arts)-  We are taking a break from Ranger Rick this month.  We will go to the library and he will have a reading log to fill out for this unit.  The focus is on reading comprehension.  He will be video taped reading a few of his books for his portfolio.  He will chose one writing assignment for the portfolio.

(Computer skills)-  We will combine American history with the whole Social Studies unit.  All of his work will be completed on the computer.  He will have maps to study, researching events, observing pictures, and he will take his tests.  Mathew will chose from a list of topics.

(Art)-  The Fall unit will include using nature in all of his art projects.  He will chose one project to put in his portfolio.

(Gym and Health)-  We will finish up his physical fitness log and he will be studying anatomy.  Playdough will be made into organs.  He will complete a test at the end.

These are a few of the many activities (Without tears) that Mathew has been inspired to do.  The biggest improvements would be his:
                   *Willingness to learn
                   *Motivation everyday to research
                   *Relationship with everyone and volunteering
                   *Time spent on projects
                   *He smiles more :)

Brock's Unit-  The Fall

Brock- Self chosen activities and mom led activities (3 years old)

(Math)-   It's all about games this month.  Brock can recognize numbers to 10,000.  He will play games such as bingo, matching, and using grids this month.

(Science)-  He is still observing nature.  He will have many opportunities to play outside and continue going to the woods on walking trails.  We will combine Language arts unit with Science.

(Language arts)-  Brock completed reading 2 new books.  He will continue to practice his words.  This month is Action Words.  He will be able to do the action as well as read them in sentences.  He is still practicing writing words and spelling them.  He can now recognize 40 words.

(Fine arts)-  This theme is about colors.  He knows his colors but now we are using them to blend for his art projects.  We will use leaves, twigs, and collect other nature items to make projects.  He will begin listening to christmas songs this month because mommy will be practicing her shows.  He will go outside to play in nature as much as we possibly can.  We will finish up our nature walks.  However, since ladybugs have been everywhere, I can't get him over his fear of them.  He screams everytime one lands on him or he sees one.  He isn't a bug person.  Maybe that can change next year.

(Social Studies)-  We will add this unit in.  This unit is about helping around the house.  He is learning to say thank you and showing me what he wants.  There will be opportunities for him to help with cookies, pies, and laundry.  He loves laundry!  Along with the Language arts Action Words, we will learn about emotions.

As you can see we do alot of different activities.  Everyday is different because they no longer follow strict schedules and times to do activities.  When they become engaged in an activity (all the time) that is when learning is taking place.  I don't force activities on them that they don't want to do.  I am learning to let go of my wants for them and letting them become who they are.  We have no lesson plans and we research anything we don't know.
